“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” – Dr. Maya Angelou

Resilience Through Music (RTM) believes children of all ages should have access to music and music education as a way to build autonomy and resiliency.

Our mission is to support youth enrolled in hospital-based violence intervention programs to more fully understand and integrate all aspects of their recovery experience by transforming their traumatic experiences and struggles into a creative art process which both empowers and inspires, thus motivating their continued healing and autonomy.

We believe that cultivating resilience through musical practice during challenging times can be a proactive way of reacting to the unexpected, the difficult, and the upsetting that our life experiences may bring. Musical practice may help children respond to their environment and facilitate an understanding of the impacts of trauma, including how to cope with the effects of trauma and adverse experiences.

We also provide educational opportunities for parents, guardians, caregivers, and community members to learn more about the experience of trauma (ACEs, historical or intergenerational trauma) and the ways in which trauma-informed practices promote healing in youth through music education and creative community partnerships.
